In the winters, Alfred T. Ringling lived in a 28 room mansion on over 1000 acres of land, around what is now Lake Swanannoa. In the early 1900's, he had the first dams built to hold back the river and the lake. The Ringling Manor still stands today but much of the rest of the property has been developed.
